DIY: Paper Fan Flower Ornament

This ornament is based upon the Paper Fan Flower I created for packaging decoration. It’s simple and can add a pop of color as a Christmas tree ornament or as party decorations hung on the wall or hung from the ceiling.

SUPPLIES
  • Glue
  • Colored paper
  • String
  • Hole punch (optional)
  • Scissors

DIRECTIONS
— 1 —
Cut colored paper in half.

I used glitter construction paper that was 9 inches by 12 inches, cut lengthwise.

— 2 —
Accordion fold one of the paper halves.

— 3 —
Fold the accordion folded paper in half.

— 4 —
Repeat Step 2–3 on the second paper half.

— 5 —
Glue two accordion folded paper pieces together to create one long piece.

— 6 —
Cut a length of string (mine was about 16 inches long for Option 1; for Option 2 the string can be much shorter, like 4 inches). Center the string and wrap around the center of the accordion folded paper and double-knot.

FINISH OPTION 1

— 7 —
Glue two paper end flaps together. You may wish to hold the paper ends together for a minute until the glue bonds the paper together.

— 8 —
Apply glue to the second paper end flap and use that glue to adhere both the other paper flap as well as the string. The string will be glued between the paper ends. Again, you may wish to hold the paper ends together for a minute until the glue bonds the paper together.

— 9 —
Knot the string ends. Cut off any excess string. Paper Fan Flower Ornament complete.

FINISH OPTION 2

— 7 —
Glue two paper end flaps together on both sides. You may wish to hold the paper ends together for a minute until the glue bonds the paper together. Cut string ends.

— 8 —
With the hole punch, punch a hole at the top of the paper.

— 9 —
Cut a second length of string (mine was about 10 inches long). Put the string through the hole and knot the end. Cut off any excess string. Paper Fan Flower Ornament complete.

Why two options to finish? One option may work better than another depending on the materials you’re using (e.g. if you use a thicker string or ribbon, Option 1 might not work as well. Or perhaps you want to use a thin string to knot the middle and a thicker ribbon to hang the Paper Fan Flower Ornament). It also depends on how wide your folds are whether or not you’re able to punch a hole at the top of your Paper Fan Flower Ornament.
